Dallas Smith 20 years a full tme artist

Dallas Smith

I was born in the summer of '69 which may sound more romantic than it was. As the son of a renowned South African artist, I was taught the intricacies of painting whilst still very young, so much so that at the tender age of 13 I already had a steady income from my painting sales.

As was the custom in our country, I completed my compulsory two year military service after having matriculated. I will do you a favour and place no pictures of this particular time in my life. The one image that stuck in my mind is that of the magnificent Caprivi sunsets as backdrop to the African elephants in silhouette.

In 1989 my army boots were finally chucked aside and I embarked on life which for me would not be that of a 9-5 office job - believe me, I tried it. So, I started painting on a full time basis...

I lived in Johannesburg and also spent a few years in Graskop, Mpumalanga before finally settling down, along with my family in Plettenberg bay, some 15 years ago.

Every day I am thrilled to drive to my studio in the beautiful setting of Thesen Island, Knysna. It is great to be able to do what I am passionate about and after so many years of doing it, I still find excitement in contemplating every new painting endeavour.
